Routes to the register

Part of the GMC's Quality Assurance Framework involves the recommendation by the JRCPTB of trainees to the UK specialist register through the Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or the Portfolio pathway (formerly known as CESR).

There is no difference in recognition between the types of certificates. Attainment of any one of the awards will mean a doctor is eligible to apply for entry onto the UK specialist register  and thus has the opportunity to apply and to work as a consultant  in the UK.

Visit the GMC website for further information about specialist registration.

Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT)

For a doctor to be recommended for a CCT, all of the training stipulated in the CMT or specialty curriculum must be completed within GMC approved UK training posts.

See the GMC website for further information about CCT.

Portfolio pathway (formerly known as CESR)

Doctors who believe they do not need to undergo further higher specialist training because they have acquired sufficient non GMC approved training, experience and qualifications relevant to the entirety of the curriculum may apply for direct entry onto the UK specialist register through the Portfolio pathway (formerly known as CESR).
