Changes to MRCP(UK) Limited Attempts Policy

We are introducing changes to the policy on the maximum number of attempts candidates can take at each part of the diploma (Part 1/Part 2 Written/PACES): Candidates who are applying to sit Part 1 for the first time from the 1 January 2022, will be allowed a maximum of six attempts at each part of MRCP(UK).

We are introducing changes to the policy on the maximum number of attempts candidates can take at each part of the diploma (Part 1/Part 2 Written/PACES):

  • Candidates who are applying to sit Part 1 for the first time from the 1 January 2022, will be allowed a maximum of six attempts at each part of MRCP(UK). Candidates who reach six attempts for any individual examination will be allowed to apply for one exceptional additional attempt. A maximum of one exceptional attempt at any examination will be permitted. Candidates who reach the maximum number of attempts at any part of the examination will not be allowed to proceed.
  • There will be interim arrangements in place, in line with the policy from 2014 to 2021, for candidates who had their first attempt at Part 1 before 31 December 2021. These interim arrangements will be in place until 1 January 2024, from when the policy outlined above will apply to all candidates irrespective of when they first sat MRCP(UK). Any candidates who have started the MRCP(UK) and have already had more than six attempts, or will reach this between 2022 and January 2024, will still be allowed to apply for additional attempts using the current process of demonstrating additional educational activity.

Further detail can be found in paragraph 3.3.1 and 3.3.2 of the MRCP(UK) Regulations here and on the Limit on Attempts page here.
