The fourth diet of the examination was initially introduced as a temporary measure during the pandemic in response to moving examinations to a remote online format. This aimed to ensure that no candidate would be disadvantaged by interruptions to examination delivery, by providing an additional opportunity to sit during the year. The removal of the impediments to candidates sitting that existed in 2020-2022 means that that there is now less need to provide this extra opportunity.
Analysis of both candidate number and training data has demonstrated that reducing the number of diets will not hinder trainee progression. MRCP(UK) will endeavour to ensure that application periods are scheduled to enable candidates to sit at the next available opportunity.
Due to the higher level of candidate demand, MRCP(UK) will continue deliver four diets of the Part 1 examination each year.
