UK PACES Prioritisation criteria for 2025/2 assessment period

There will be four broad prioritisation categories (see below) for allocating candidates applying to available PACES places in the UK.

Candidates may apply irrespective of the nature of their current employment or country of residence. Please note however that in general candidates who do not currently occupy a recognised UK training post with a Deanery Training Number are less likely to be allocated a place unless they have already completed CMT or IMT, or hold a valid Alternative Certificate (see below). All candidates, irrespective of their prioritisation category are however encouraged to apply. In recent PACES diets we have been able to accommodate candidates from category 4a.

Category 1

  • In IMY3/ACCS CT3/ST3 (with a Deanery training number).
  • 2025/1 candidates in UK centres that were cancelled (irrespective of whether they hold a training number).
  • Any candidate who has had an appeal upheld in their most recent PACES attempt.
  • Any candidate whose pass/fail status was revised in the Part 2 Written 2023.03 results issue.

Category 2a

  • In IMY2/ACCS CT2 with a deanery training number and a pass in Part 2 Written at time of application.
  • Completed CMT/IMT at any time with a pass in Part 2 Written at time of application (irrespective of whether they hold a training number).
  • Those who are not in a recognised UK training post, with a Pass in Part 2 Written at time of application but who are intending to apply for Higher Specialty Training in 2025 with a valid Alternative Certificate*. Please note that candidates will be required to provide evidence of their alternative certificate before they are allocated a place in the examination. **

Category 2b

  • In IMY2/ACCS CT2 with a deanery training number but without a pass in Part 2 Written at time of application.
  • Completed CMT/IMT at any time without a pass in Part 2 Written at time of application (irrespective of whether they hold a training number).
  • Those who are not in a recognised UK training post, without a Pass in Part 2 Written at time of application, but who are intending to apply for Higher Specialty Training in 2025 with a valid Alternative Certificate*. Please note that candidates will be required to provide evidence of their alternative certificate before they are allocated a place in the examination**.

Category 3

  • In IMY1/ACCS CT1 with a Deanery training number.

Category 4a

  • Applicants who have previously applied for but not been offered a PACES place at a UK examination centre.

Category 4b

  • All other applicants applying for a PACES place at a UK examination centre.

Notes

*See the NHS Physician Higher Specialty Training Recruitment website for full details of the requirements for the Alternative Certificate.

**If applying to sit the PACES examination with a valid Alternative Certificate, the form (2024 or 2025 version) will be required to be submitted to your college of entry by 5pm on Monday 7 April 2025. Acceptance of your application for an examination place will be subject to receipt of an Alternative Certificate by that deadline.
