Latest update on the McLachlan report – 6 May 2026

Further to our initial update on 28 January 2026 on actions taken in response to the recommendations made in the McLachlan report, we are pleased to report further progress.

In the initial update we advised that seven of the 22 recommendations had been completed whilst others were in progress. The number of recommendations completed and addressed now stands at eleven and further advances have been made on those that remain in progress.

The report highlights the progress made since our last update. We will provide a further update at the beginning of August.

The colour key assigned to each recommendation denotes the action status of the activity:
Green = actioned / completed
Amber = in progress

As pledged on 6 November 2025, we have and will continue to share our learning with other assessment and exam bodies within the wider healthcare system via our established networks and communication channels. We were actively involved in the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges Short Life Working Group on Quality Assurance Processes for Exams which produced its report on 23 March which can be found here. We will also continue to work closely with the colleges’ resident doctors’ committees, including meeting with them to get their input on specific activities and improvements to our processes.

We remain committed to continuous improvement in the delivery of our assessments and other activities that sit within the Federation’s remit and again, welcome feedback from stakeholders on anything relating to this report and our approach which should be sent to: Benjamin.gillon@thefederation.uk
